Near Miss on Chemical Refinery Leak

At about 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 4th, a shelter-in-place order was issued by the City of Texas City for residents and businesses located within a block boundaried by 14th and 34th Streets, east and west, and 5th Ave. and Texas Ave., north and south, near the “industry sector.” Residents in that area were instructed to remain inside, turn air conditioning off and close all windows due to a hydrogen fluoride gas leak at Marathon’s Bay Refinery. The order was rescinded at 5:00 pm. Two refinery workers were taken to be checked at a local medical facility as a precaution, but there were no reported injuries. Marathon issued a statement confirming the relatively brief leak and promising a full investigation as to its cause.
