Man Dead, Woman Injured in Freeway Crash
At about 2:50 am on Monday, April 22nd, a man driving his pickup northbound on the North Freeway near Cypresswood Drive in the Spring area apparently went to sleep at the wheel, veered off the pavement and along a grassy median until the pickup slammed head-on at a high rate of speed into a large metal light pole completely crushing the engine compartment. Both the driver and his adult female passenger were unconscious when first responders arrived and firefighters had to cut them out of the wreckage before they could be taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The man died shortly after arrival and the woman remains in critical care. According to Spring Police officers on the scene, neither victim was wearing a seat belt. Investigation of the tragedy continues, which will include routine autopsy toxicology tests to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash.
