Industrial Bus Crash Kills 1, Injures 30
At about 3:00 pm on Tuesday, October 23rd, a bus owned by Zachry Construction being used to transport contract construction workers from a Freeport area industrial plant to a regional parking area overturned on the ramp leading from Highway 36 onto Highway 228 north, just east of the bridge crossing the Brazos River in west Freeport. According to Freeport Police officers on the scene, the westbound bus fishtailed, overturned and rolled several times down an embankment, landing on its side in a large drainage canal full of standing water. One person aboard the bus was killed and thirty others were taken to CHI St. Luke’s Health-Brazosport Medical Center in Lake Jackson to be treated for a variety of injuries. First responders included Freeport fire fighters and EMS personnel, as well as Clute and Freeport Police officers. Investigation of the mishap continues.
