Drunk Teen, Served Illegally, Injures 4
At about 9:25 pm on Sunday, May 24th, an 18-year-old highly intoxicated male who had been illegally served liquor climbed behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima with an adult woman in the front passenger seat and her unsecured 7-year-old son in the back seat. The Altima headed southbound on Highway 6, but within just a few minutes the vehicle turned right in front of an on-coming Honda Accord in the 7800 block at Pavilion Point and the two vehicles crashed head-on.
Both vehicles sustained severe front end damage and, while the drunk teen driver was unhurt, his woman passenger suffered a shattered leg and her son sustained “horrific” head injuries. According to HPD officers on the scene, the two victims were Life Flighted to an area hospital in critical condition and the small boy is unlikely to survive. There were two occupants in the Accord and they were taken by ambulance to the same hospital in undetermined condition.
The Altima’s teen driver fled the scene on foot, but was quickly apprehended by witnesses who brought him back to the arriving officers. He was immediately arrested and now faces several felony criminal charges. Officers are also investigating where he was illegally served alcohol and any persons who participated in such will also face criminal charges. If the 7-year-old dies, the driver’s charges will be upgraded to murder. His mother may also face child endangerment charges.
