Drunk Rear-Ends, Injures Motorcycle Cop, Flees
At about 9:00 pm on Saturday, August 17th, an HPD motorcycle cop on patrol was stopped at a red light on the Eastex Freeway Service Road at Will Clayton Parkway in northeast Houston when a pickup came up behind him and struck the bike with such force that the officer was thrown from it and injured. The driver of the pickup then fled the scene. One of several witnesses at the scene called the collision in to 911 by cell phone and several HPD cruisers quickly responded. Based upon numerous tips from the witnesses gathered around the victim at the scene, the police were able to fairly quickly locate the suspected hit-and-run driver, as well as the pickup involved in the collision. That driver was arrested and now faces several criminal charges. The injured officer was taken by ambulance to Memorial-Hermann Hospital in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. Sadly, as police were completing their investigation of this incident another drunk driver barreled into the collision scene and was stopped and arrested.
The old Wild West, as portrayed in hundreds of cowboy films, had nothing on Houston’s modern streets and highways in the drunken mayhem department. It seems incomprehensible that a modern city like Houston would continue year-after-year to permit such an astonishingly high degree of damage, injuries and deaths to be caused by drunk drivers, but here we are about to enter the final third of 2019 and the carnage continues unabated. It seems incomprehensible that not one of our leaders can figure out how to deal with this problem in a meaningful way.
In the meantime, if you or a loved one is ever injured in a collision with a drunk driver, please call us. We have dealt with such incidents for a very long time and we take special pride in holding irresponsible drunk drivers accountable for the terrible harm they cause.
