Drunk Father of Three Causes Fatal Wreck

Around 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 11th, a 26-year-old Houston man caused a major multi-vehicle wreck in the 8900 block of E. Sam Houston Parkway/Beltway 8 at West Road, which killed one victim and injured five others. According to Harris County Sheriff’s deputies on the scene, the man was driving a GMC Sierra pickup and attempted to exit the West Road Toll Plaza at a high rate of speed. He lost control and crashed into another vehicle, causing it to roll over and hit a large brick sign, instantly killing its adult male driver. The pickup kept going and smashed into another vehicle driven by an adult female who was pulling out of a church parking lot, seriously injuring her. Then, the pickup hit three more vehicles in that parking lot before finally gliding to a stop. None of the occupants of those vehicles were injured. The pickup driver’s wife and their three small children, ages 13 months, 5 and 6, were all injured and badly shaken in the multiple collisions. All of them, as well as the driver of the vehicle leaving the parking lot, were taken by ambulances to area hospitals with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Deputies reported that the pickup’s driver, who of course was unscratched in this tragedy, was significantly intoxicated, and, because he had passengers under the age of 15, he was charged with felony DWI. Additionally, he has been charged with murder as he killed the first vehicle’s adult male driver in the act of committing a felony. Consequently, if convicted of all the charges he faces, he could be looking at a lengthy prison term.
