‘Car Surfing’ Teen Dies in Fall
One of the most consistent aspects of being a teen over the last few decades has been foolish acts and mistakes that, in retrospect, can only leave you scratching your head at what the young person could have possibly been thinking… or not thinking. Most of the time such bone-headed behaviors result in some property damage, varying degrees of embarrassment and some humorous stories for later in life. But, once in a while such stunts have horrible outcomes. On the afternoon of Sunday, October 20th, a 17-year-old male teen was driving his Mini-Cooper in the parking lot of Klein ISD’s Hildebrandt Intermediate School while another 17-year-old boy was “car surfing” on the vehicle’s roof. The driver hit the brakes too suddenly and the rider lost his balance and fell to the pavement, striking his head hard. According the Harris County Sheriff’s deputies on the scene, the victim sustained a massive brain injury and was Life Flighted to an area hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The incident remains under investigation and criminal charges may be filed against the driver.
If you have teenagers, please sit down with them often to discuss the all-too-real consequences of “games” which have the potential to go terribly wrong and to remind them that we live in real life, not a cartoon or video game or computer-generated action movie world where people who are injured just hop up without a scratch and happily take off for more mayhem. And, if your beloved teen is ever injured in an incident like this one, please consider calling us. We have dealt with such situations for a very long time and we are experts at holding irresponsible people accountable for the harm they cause, even if they’re thoughtless teens.
